PD.ID: Date Rape Drug Detector

A new Indiegogo project aims to help people determine if their drinks have been drugged. Given that date rape drugs are often colorless, odorless and tasteless, the pd.id would protect people from being drugged at social gatherings. The pd.id would first alert with an LED light, then report the specific drug used via phone call or text (compatible with Apple, Android and Blackberry smartphones).

As described by Vocativ, the pd.id is a portable device that “performs electrical conductivity tests, temperature measurements and spectroscopic analysis to determine the molecular makeup of the beverage in question.” The pd.id utilizes technology used by the United States’ DEA in a user-friendly gadget the size of a USB flash drive. If pd.id surpasses fundraising goals, the team hopes to explore ways to connect with an emergency dispatch app, report nutritional content and donate pd.ids to women’s institutions.

The reusable, battery operated device would cost $75. It would be nice to see bars lending the device to customers for free in order to join the cause against sexual offenses. The pd.id hopes to give people piece of mind and prevent sexual assault. What do you think about the device? Would you buy it for yourself, a family member or friend? Let us know in a comment below!
